The character was loosely based on Red Sonya of Rogatino in Robert E. Howard's short story "The Shadow of the Vulture" (The Magic Carpet, January 1934), which Roy Thomas rewrote as a Conan story for the Marvel comic.
Conan is captured as a child by Thulsa Doom, head of the malignant snake-cult of Set. For 15 years he is chained to the wheel of pain grinding grain, then enslaved as a pit fighter, developing a magnificent body and an indominable spirit.
After her family is murdered, a young woman becomes a master of the sword and seeks revenge on the evil queen responsible for the mayhem that has befallen her.
